This Privacy Policy explains how Softlanding (softlanding.life), operated by Yusof as a personal blog, collects, uses, and protects personal data when you visit the site or contact me. I aim to handle information responsibly and in line with the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA) of Singapore.

Who is responsible

The data controller for this site is Yusof, reachable at [email protected] or Blk 168 Punggol Field, #04-22, Singapore 820168. Softlanding is a personal blog, not a company. There is no separate legal entity behind the site.

What this site is

Softlanding publishes first-person writing about everyday life in Singapore. It does not sell products, offer professional services, or run user accounts. The only routine way you share personal data with me is through the contact form or by emailing me directly.

Personal data I may collect

Depending on how you use the site, I may process:

  • Contact form data: your name, email address, and message content when you submit the form on the contact page.
  • Email correspondence: if you write to [email protected], I receive whatever you choose to include in your email and any standard email headers (such as your address and subject line).
  • Technical data: if you accept analytics cookies, limited usage information such as pages viewed, approximate referrer, browser type, and general device information may be collected through analytics tools.
  • Server logs: my hosting provider may automatically record standard server logs (such as IP address, request time, and requested URL) for security and operational purposes. I do not use these logs to identify individual readers routinely.

I do not ask for your NRIC, financial details, precise home address, or other sensitive categories of data through this site.

How I use personal data

I use personal data for these purposes:

  • To read and respond to messages you send via the contact form or email.
  • To operate, secure, and maintain the website.
  • To understand general readership patterns if you consent to analytics cookies.
  • To comply with applicable law if required.

I do not sell personal data. I do not use your contact details for marketing lists. I do not share messages with third parties except where necessary to operate the site (for example, email delivery through my hosting or mail provider) or where the law requires disclosure.

Legal basis and consent

Under the PDPA, I rely on your consent for contact form submissions. The consent checkbox on the contact form is not pre-ticked. By ticking it and submitting the form, you consent to my collecting and using your name, email, and message to respond to you.

For essential site operation (such as serving pages and protecting against abuse), I may process limited technical data on the basis of legitimate interests in running a secure personal website.

For analytics cookies, I ask for your consent through the cookie banner. You may accept all, reject non-essential cookies, or customise your choice. Non-essential cookies are not placed until you consent, except where strictly necessary for basic functionality.

Cookies and similar technologies

This site uses cookies and browser storage as follows:

  • Essential storage: a local storage entry may record your cookie preference so the banner does not reappear on every visit. This preference is stored for six months.
  • Analytics cookies (optional): if you consent, analytics cookies may help me understand how readers use the site in aggregate. You can withdraw consent by clearing site data or using the cookie banner when it appears again after expiry.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking all cookies may affect how the cookie banner remembers your choice.

Retention

I keep contact form messages and related email correspondence only as long as needed to respond and for a reasonable period afterward in case of follow-up, typically up to twelve months unless a longer period is needed for a specific thread you and I are continuing.

Cookie consent records stored locally on your device expire after six months, after which the banner will ask for your choice again.

Server logs retained by my hosting provider are governed by their retention policies, usually on a rolling short-term basis.

Third parties

The site is hosted independently. Hosting and email routing may involve processors who handle technical data on my behalf. I choose providers that apply reasonable security measures. Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts; your browser may request them directly from Google when you load a page. Please refer to Google's privacy information if you wish to know more about that service.

I do not embed social media login, advertising networks, or third-party comment systems on this site.

International transfers

My hosting and email infrastructure may process data outside Singapore. Where this occurs, I expect providers to apply appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable data protection requirements.

Security

I take reasonable steps to protect personal data, including using HTTPS, keeping software updated, and limiting access to contact submissions. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure; I cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your rights under the PDPA

Subject to exceptions under Singapore law, you may:

  • Ask whether I hold personal data about you and request access to it.
  • Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
  • Withdraw consent for contact or analytics processing, though withdrawal may limit my ability to respond or improve the site.
  • Request information about how your personal data has been used or disclosed.

To exercise these rights, email [email protected] with enough detail for me to identify your request. I may need to verify your identity before responding. I aim to respond within a reasonable period.

Children

This site is written for a general audience and is not directed at children. I do not knowingly collect personal data from children under thirteen. If you believe a child has submitted personal data through the contact form, please let me know and I will delete it.

Posts may mention places or link to external websites I do not control. Their privacy practices are their own. I encourage you to read their policies if you leave softlanding.life.

Changes to this policy

I may update this Privacy Policy when the site changes or when law or practice requires it. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when I do. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy, to the extent permitted by law.
